Buddy Up

I thought today’s WW meeting was really good.  I love our leader, she is so funny and upbeat.  We talked about having a buddy to help you during your healthy lifestyle changes.  I completely agree with this concept.  Sometimes I think it’s easier said than done.  When I first started WW in 2005, I didn’t really tell anyone about it.  I was embarrassed of my weight and I didn’t want to call attention to myself.  I didn’t want to be the girl on another “diet”.  I was still trying to figure out the program and learning how to make it work for me.  I used to go for daily walks around my neighborhood by myself.  I enjoyed the “me” time to be alone and to be able to think about things.  After a while, I began running.  After I got tired of the same ole music… I began downloading books to listen to.  This was perfect!  I would look forward to running 3 or 4 times a week so I could listen to my novel.  I listened to every one of Nicholas Spark’s books!  Eventually I met some other runner’s in my neighborhood and we formed a running group.  I was using the Jeff Galloway run/walk method to train for my first full marathon.  This meant I wasn’t the fastest, and often I would find myself falling behind the group and still running on my own.  After my first marathon, I started working out with a trainer, and he said a good way to increase my running speed was to WALK at a level 12 incline on the treadmill.  I did this 3 or 4 times a week for about 3 months.  Since that time, I have been able to run consistently with no walk breaks.  I was able to keep up with the group and really improve my running times.  I REALLY enjoyed being able to run with so many friends.  It changed the whole dynamic of running for me.  6am became one of the favorite times of my day.  I became very good friends with the group and enjoyed every second of it.  We even took weight lifting classes at the gym.  I finally felt like I was a part of something that was so good for me!  Last August, we moved to a different city…. 4 hours from my work out buddies!  I miss all of them so much.  I was spoiled to the safety and security of the group.  After the move, it took me months to find my place.  I finally met some new girls to run with and am happy to report I’m back to running 3 or 4 times a week with new friends.
Carman, Cyndi and I don’t live close enough to be able to work out together during the week, but we definitely support each other in our WW endeavors.  Having this blog allows us to report our daily food intake.  (We are currently moving things over from a private blog, so you will hear more from them soon)  We share recipes, food finds, and encouragement on a daily basis.
I know I’ve rambled on long enough, I just think it is very true that surrounding yourself with as many supporters as possible is going to be your best bet!  Eating healthy and enjoying exercise is ALWAYS better with a friend!

About Lexy

40 years old, "stay at home mom" to 2 boys (ages 16 and 14), wife to a chiropractic kinesiologist! I love blogging and learning new ideas. I follow the Weight Watchers Points Plus program and enjoy working out. I have run 2 full 26.2 mile marathons and 3 half marathons... and many 10k and 5k's. I love taking BodyPump classes and lifting weights. Working out has always been fun for me, but I struggle with eating healthy. Blogging has introduced me to a world of healthy eaters... When I first started WW... I just wanted someone to tell me what to eat! I didn't like cooking and I am not the kind of person that can just throw things together. There are tons of ideas out there and I love finding new and fun ones that I feel like I am capable of making myself!
