Lite Your Fire – Ciro

Today, I’m very excited to share the story of one of my closest friends, Ciro!  I have known him since I was 13 or 14 years old.  Here is a picture of us from back then…

He can make me laugh like no other!!  Here are a few more pics of us.  We have had a lot of fun over the years!  He is one of those special friends that you have in life that knows so much about you … and loves you anyway!  He is relentless when it comes to teasing me and just the thought of him makes me SMILE!  So grateful to know him!  He’s the best!

Have you struggled with weight/body image issues throughout your life?

I guess I have, when I was in my teens I wanted to be heavier. I used to weigh 127 lbs. and was very active. I maintained a healthy weight until I was in my mid 20’s when I started gaining weight. At first it was nice, I was able to get up to 145 lbs… then I hit 175 lbs… then 185 lbs… and before I knew it I had gone over 200 lbs. My heaviest weight was 228 lbs. I am currently back down at 200 lbs. and my goal is to get to 165 lbs.

Was there a significant event that triggered your changes?

I’m not sure. I was never uncomfortable being heavy. In my early 30’s I was diagnosed with HIV and in my Mid 30’s I found out I had cancer. My doctors kept telling me to lose weight but I never listened. I am now 39 years old (5 months from turning 40) and I thought… I am living with HIV, I survived cancer… but I might die from high blood pressure or cholesterol…. HELL NO!  I guess the fact that I did not feel very healthy made me want to change. I take an HIV regimen every day, did one year of chemo and radiation, and I also take blood pressure and cholesterol medicine. I figured if I lost weight I could at least drop the two pills. I hate taking pills.

Did you have someone that inspired you to make changes?

My oldest friend in the world Lexy is such an inspiration….she looks fabulous….but to me she has always looked fabulous.  (*awww… thank you!!  love you!*)

Did you incorporate a certain diet?  Restrict calories?  Or follow any certain plan?

Lexy introduced me to Weight Watchers, I liked the fact that you could do it all online and also that they had tons of great recipes…. I don’t like diet food.

What did you eat on an average day?

Lots of vegetables and salads, chicken, fruit and the biggest change is not skipping breakfast. Basically I eat anything I want… in moderation. That’s what I love about Weight Watchers…. I did give up on the fast food. No more Whataburger at 2AM.

Did you exercise?  If so, what type of exercise do you enjoy?  Did you work out with family or friends?

Throughout my teen years and early twenties I was a running fool. 80 to 100 miles a week was nothing…. I miss running but my knees are shot. I go out for walks with John my partner of 16 years.

When did people first notice the changes?

My co-workers started noticing after I lost about 10 lbs.

How did your family react? Were they supportive?

Yes. They have been very supportive, my sisters are both doing weight watchers.

Did it take a while for your mind to adjust to the new you?

I really don’t notice the weight loss. I look in the mirror and don’t really notice the difference, but I feel better and the scale says I lost weight so I trust the scale.

How did you measure your success throughout the process?

Weight Watchers Points Plus tracker and WeightTracker. I am now able to fit into clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in years! (I wish I hadn’t sold all of my couture clothes…. silly me never thought I’d be able to wear them again. I did keep a red Gianni Versace jacket and my Gianni Versace Tuxedo. When I get into those two items…. I will have reached my goal.

Do you feel like your confidence has improved?

If you knew me… you would know that confidence has never been a problem. I am fabulous whether thick or thin LOL…. I feel much better now though…

Is there anything else you want to tell us?

Don’t lose weight to make someone else happy, do it to make yourself healthy and happy.

About Lexy

40 years old, "stay at home mom" to 2 boys (ages 16 and 14), wife to a chiropractic kinesiologist! I love blogging and learning new ideas. I follow the Weight Watchers Points Plus program and enjoy working out. I have run 2 full 26.2 mile marathons and 3 half marathons... and many 10k and 5k's. I love taking BodyPump classes and lifting weights. Working out has always been fun for me, but I struggle with eating healthy. Blogging has introduced me to a world of healthy eaters... When I first started WW... I just wanted someone to tell me what to eat! I didn't like cooking and I am not the kind of person that can just throw things together. There are tons of ideas out there and I love finding new and fun ones that I feel like I am capable of making myself!
