Lite Your Fire Monday – Shannon :)

So happy to be sharing Shannon’s story with you today!!! Hopefully one day we will get to meet “in person”… but for now we are becoming blogging friends! We’ve even talked on the phone so we could help each other put things into perspective. This whole weight loss thing can be emotional!! :) It’s so nice to meet people that are like minded and so encouraging!! Check out her inspiring story below!!

Tell us a little about yourself so we can get to know you better:

I’m married and we have a 16 year old son. My husband and I both work for our local school system, he in the print department and me in the school nutrition office, doing accounts payable. I also attend college part time.

 

Have you struggled with weight/body image issues throughout your life?

Thinking back, I guess I have. I was a very thin child. In high school I started putting on weight and by the time I graduated, I was around 170 pounds. When I got pregnant with my son at age 24, I was down to 140. I lost almost all of my pregnancy weight and maintained that weight for about 10 years. For the past 5 years or so, the weight has slowly crept up on me.  

 

Was there a significant event that triggered your changes?

I had a Christmas ornament exchange party this past Christmas. When I saw the pictures of myself from that party, I knew that was IT. I had to do something. 

 

Did you have someone that inspired you to make changes?

Not really. I had to decide for myself that I wanted to change.

 

Did you incorporate a certain diet? Restrict calories? Or follow any certain plan?

I joined Weight Watchers on 12/28/11 and reached my goal weight on 5/13/12. A lovely Mother’s Day gift to myself. :)

 

Do you exercise? If so, what type of exercise do you enjoy? Did you work out with family or friends?

Yes. I have always been a walker, but recently I have decided to try running. I finished the Couch 2 5 K program and I ran (and finished) my first 5K on 4/14/12!

 

When did people first notice the changes?

After I lost the first 10 pounds or so.

 

Did it take a while for your mind to adjust to the new you?

Not really. I’m loving it! And loving buying a new wardrobe. :)

 

How did you measure your success throughout the process? How much weight did you lose and how long have you kept it off?

Every week when I weighed in and saw the scale continue to go down, that was success to me! I’ve lost a total of 30 pounds. Success will continue as long as I maintain my current weight. 

 

What obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?

One of the perks of working in the school nutrition department is free lunch every day from a school. This food is not nutritious. (that’s another debate…lol)

I had to reach a point where I refused to eat the food. I bring my lunch every day now and have been doing that since the beginning of the year.

 

Which of your personal goals have you achieved?

I have started back to college after years of talking about doing so. I ran my first 5K. And I’ve dropped 2 pants sizes.

 

Do you feel like your confidence has improved?

Yes, tremdously.

 

What has changed the most about you?

Being obsessed about what I eat and making sure it’s healthy.

 

What did you find hardest about this process? How did you overcome it?

The whole process has been easy. I honestly think you can do anything you put your mind to. If you want it badly enough, you can make it happen.

 

How did your family react? Were they supportive?

My family is very supportive and they usually will eat whatever I put in front of them.

 

What do you eat on an average day on program?/What are some of your favorite foods that keep you on track?

For breakfast I usually eat a protein waffle (thanks FLF girls!) and fruit, or a boiled egg with string cheese and a piece of fruit. Lunch varies. Sometimes it’s leftovers. For dinner, I like to try new recipes and I’m constantly looking for different things to cook that fit within my daily points allowance.

 

What are your biggest tips for people that are trying to maintain their weight loss?

Stick with it. There will be ups and downs, but the reward is so great!

 

Is there anything else you want to tell us?

I don’t think I could have reached my goal weight as quickly as I did if not for Lexy, Carman and Cyndi. Reading their blog, taking their food suggestions, and using some of their recipes were all very instrumental in my success. I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. What you do does make a difference!
