Lite Your Fire Monday’s :)

I am so excited to share the success story of our Weight Watchers leader! Karen is THE BEST leader! She lost an amazing 50 lbs! She has worked for WW for 12 years and has been a Diamond Leader 5 times…it is the highest award in WW. She is a Coach… which means she trains new leaders and is a Ambassador. Ambassador is part of the PR department at WW. She does speaking engagements, health fairs, interviews for television & radio, etc. She is so funny, witty, knowledgable, inspiring, relatable, etc! She makes the meetings so enjoyable! I have learned many tips and tricks about the Weight Watchers program from her. I loved reading her answers to the following questions! (I can’t wait to go to my meeting this week to learn all about the Points Plus 2012 updates!!)

First Name/Age: Karen age 55

Have you struggled with weight/body image issues throughout your life?

Oh my, YES!!! I was known as the “chubby” baby!!! I have been on some sort of diet since I was very young…can’t really remember the exact age. My Mom (she didn’t mean too) but she picked on me a lot concerning my weight. It was very hard. There are times that I still deal with the way I look….that one is tough! However, I know I am not overweight and I am at a healthy weight for me. I have to say that out loud to myself many times!

Was there a significant event that triggered your changes?

Yes, I reached a weight that I never dreamed I would see and it truly frightened me! I knew that I couldn’t keep dieting and regaining. It was time to get help!

Did you have someone that inspired you to make changes?

Not really…after I joined Weight Watchers it really was the staff and the power of the group that helped me to see I was capable of making changes that I could live with for the rest of my life. Every staff member had maintained their weight loss for years. One receptionist that I worked with in my early years of Weight Watchers had been at goal (when she retired) for 30 years!!!! That was amazing to me! I wanted that!!!

Did you incorporate a certain diet? Restrict calories? Or follow any certain plan?

Weight Watchers was and is my plan! It really is all about healthy eating and no forbidden foods. I knew that if I got in our healthy guidelines, drank my water, and made sure to be active I could lose the weight.

Do you exercise? If so, what type of exercise do you enjoy? Did you work out with family or friends?

I do exercise. I like a lot of different activities. I have a treadmill, a bike and an elliptical. I also have a wii system which I love!!!! I really like to work out alone! I am around people all day and my work out time is my time. Time to unwind or to begin my day with less stress!

When did people first notice the changes?

It took a while for people to notice any changes. My family really noticed the changes first. I cooked differently, got up early to work out and was much more positive.

Did it take a while for your mind to adjust to the new you?

Yes, that took longer than the weight loss. It was a whole new way of thinking, not only about eating but about attitude. I had very low self-esteem because of my weight. I felt defeated a lot so when I lost the weight I had to learn to be “nicer” to myself. I actually had to learn to talk nicer to myself. I know that sounds odd but I had spent years talking negatively to myself. I remember one day I was buying shoes and I passed a full length mirror in the shoe department. Well, I stopped and looked…Honestly, at first I thought it was someone else looking at me. It was very strange and then I realized it was me. I looked fit and I for the first time in years, liked what I saw! It was a very strange moment.

How did you measure your success throughout the process?

In the beginning it was all about the scale. As time went on the weight loss slowed down so I begin to realize my success was more about the choices I was making. For instance the ability to eat out healthy! Choosing vegetables over a baked potato. Turning down dessert. Those were big things in my world. Also, making activity goals. Going a little faster or a little longer…Making those goals were huge!

Do you feel like your confidence has improved?

I am not the person I was 12 years ago. Improved confidence…Oh my goodness!!!! Where do I begin? I couldn’t stand in front of people and talk like I do now. I didn’t go to strange places. Now, I go into businesses where I know no one, lead meetings, drive everywhere. It has been a complete turnaround for me. My husband and family are very proud of me and frankly I am very thankful and proud that I am no longer that insecure person. Food is no longer what I live for.

How did your family react? Were they supportive?

My family is and was very supportive. My husband was willing to make changes. He has a happier wife and so our lives have improved greatly.

What are some of your favorite foods that keep you on track?

I love fruit!! I always make sure I have 2% cheese sticks, yogurt and small pointsplus treats, such as Weight Watchers 2 points bars, the new fiber one brownies. I love popcorn!!!

How long have you maintained your weight?

On December 15 it will be 12 years!

What are you biggest tips for people that are trying to maintain their weight loss?

Keep focusing on eating healthy, watch your portions, keep moving, weigh once a week, and surround yourself with positive support and never think you have it all down!!! You will always need to keep your habits in check.

Is there anything else that you feel is important to share with us?

I am so thankful I found Weight Watchers. I know that it truly was the key for me. I love the fact that I get to help others do what I did. I believe we are truly the best weight loss program there is!

About Lexy

40 years old, "stay at home mom" to 2 boys (ages 16 and 14), wife to a chiropractic kinesiologist! I love blogging and learning new ideas. I follow the Weight Watchers Points Plus program and enjoy working out. I have run 2 full 26.2 mile marathons and 3 half marathons... and many 10k and 5k's. I love taking BodyPump classes and lifting weights. Working out has always been fun for me, but I struggle with eating healthy. Blogging has introduced me to a world of healthy eaters... When I first started WW... I just wanted someone to tell me what to eat! I didn't like cooking and I am not the kind of person that can just throw things together. There are tons of ideas out there and I love finding new and fun ones that I feel like I am capable of making myself!
