What Do I Look Like While Running/Working Out?

Believe it or not this thought used to be something that kept me from going for walks, going running, and from working out in public all together.  I was so paranoid about what I would look like while I was working out.  In fact, this use to be the number one reason I worked out at 6am!  Because it was still kind of dark outside and I felt like I was less noticeable!  If this is something that you struggle with, I want to help you to overcome those feelings.  When I am driving in the car and see people working out (no matter what their physical appearance is)… I LOVE IT!  Instantly, I can relate to them.  I am proud of them and I secretly cheer them on while I drive by.  Most athletes that you will encounter feel the exact same way!  It is motivating to watch someone changing their life!  So keep that in mind the next time you have doubts.  Don’t let “what you currently look like” stop you from starting an exercise routine.  Like I said in this video, just “lean into it!”  Get started!  Over time, you will feel more comfortable and start figuring out the exercise you enjoy and you won’t want to live without it!

That being said…. I wanted to let you know what I like to wear when I go out for a run.  And I’m just gonna lay it all out there and explain why I like these different things… hopefully it won’t be TMI!  The last thing you want to be worried about while you are working out is having problems with your clothing.  You need to have your mind and energy focused on your work out… not on making adjustments to your hair, shorts, bra, or shoes… obviously, sometimes that is necessary but I try to have as few problems as possible.  Hahaha!  Remember that this is not a beauty pageant… but what you are accomplishing during this work out will prepare you to look awesome when it is time for make-up and looking hawt!  :)

(running toward the camara looks okay, i’ll spare you the running past the camera pic… my butt didn’t look as good as I was feeling!  haha!!)

-For the ladies, you need a good bra!  I use a bra that was recommended by Oprah!  It’s the Enell.  I love it for the major support that it provides.  No bouncy-ness going on.  It is the best bra for running I’ve ever tried!

(I weighed approx 170 lbs here and was running in a marathon relay)

-My inner thighs used to rub together when I ran…. (not anymore!  woohoo!!)  BUT!  … I highly recommend wearing spandex for running.  I know this is going to freak you out and you won’t want to do it… but seriously don’t knock it until you try it!  You never have to worry about your shorts “riding up” and you never have to worry about chafing on the inner thigh area.  I wear the Under Armour compression shorts.  I still have them and I still wear them.  I also have a pair by Nike that has a nice little zipper pouch in the back for my car key, driver’s license, gu packets, etc…  If you still choose to wear shorter shorts… I would recommend Body Glide!

(completing my first full 26.2 mile marathon)

-When it comes to shirts… I’m less picky.  I have several of these Champion shirts from Target.  I generally prefer moisture wicking shirts…. but I’ll run in any shirt, tank, etc that is light weight and comfy.

(2nd full marathon)

-I prefer Brooks Adrenaline running shoes… You can go to any running store and they are so helpful.  If it’s a true running store, they will have you try on a variety of shoes, and actually have you run in the store and watch your gait and recommend a shoe that would be best for you.  In Austin, I go to RunTex and in Houston I go to Luke’s Locker.  They will also recommend a good pair of socks.  I like Balegaby far!!!

(This was taken this past Feb 2011 the weekend before I started up again on Weight Watchers… I can’t believe I have lost over 20 lbs since then!!!!  I <3 WW!)

-When it comes to hair… I don’t want to be bothered by it during a run.  The easiest thing to do is wear a moisture wicking hat (that you can also pick up at the running store or places like Academy) over a ponytail.  When I had shorter hair, I made sure to clip my bangs back with a bobby pin or clip.  I’ve always wanted to try these Bondi Bands!!  (hint, hint, somebody tell my husband!)

-To keep track of distance, pace, time of day, etc… I use the Garmin 205.  I have an older version and I love it.  I don’t like to carry anything when I run so I use a DLOand clip my iPod to the front of my short… and run my earbuds under my shirt so they don’t flop around the whole time I’m running.  Everything is nice and orderly and I’m ready to GO!

These things are really not as complicated or overwhelming as they may seem.  Now I am very used to my routine… I try to set everything out at night before I go to bed.  It makes it a lot easier to get up and get out the door in the morning.  I NEVER dread running and I always look forward it.  There is something to be said about being out on a run as the sun is coming up, listening to good music or having a great conversation with a running partner!  And the energy and feeling I have after running can’t be beat!

40 years old, "stay at home mom" to 2 boys (ages 16 and 14), wife to a chiropractic kinesiologist! I love blogging and learning new ideas. I follow the Weight Watchers Points Plus program and enjoy working out. I have run 2 full 26.2 mile marathons and 3 half marathons... and many 10k and 5k's. I love taking BodyPump classes and lifting weights. Working out has always been fun for me, but I struggle with eating healthy. Blogging has introduced me to a world of healthy eaters... When I first started WW... I just wanted someone to tell me what to eat! I didn't like cooking and I am not the kind of person that can just throw things together. There are tons of ideas out there and I love finding new and fun ones that I feel like I am capable of making myself!

I love that you wrote this. I have been thinking about doing a post on this as well! It took me getting pregnant at 180+ pounds to start working out. Even then, it was on a treadmill or videos in the comfort of my own home. I always thought people would be looking at me or wondering why I was working out when it obviously wasn't working. In the end it all comes down to confidence. Self confidence will rule your whole world! The body does what the mind says! Also there are so many options of exercise out there…find what you love. Try new things and don't dread the workout crave it!!!
